Why schools struggle to teach reading
Teachers are heroes. But in a classroom of 30, they are outnumbered.
So the system is designed for coverage, not mastery. In many subjects this is OK. But it is a disaster for foundational reading skills.
The school system operates on a schedule, moving from unit to unit to complete a curriculum. It is a conveyor belt that cannot stop for an individual child. This creates gaps.
Most subjects can afford to leave gaps. Not reading. When schools “wait and see“ gaps don't close, they grow. This is why up to 60% of 4th graders are not proficient in reading.
